Nugget Point, Invercargill Overview

New Zealand is dotted with several iconic tourist spots, one of the most notable would be Nugget Point and the lighthouse perched on top of it. It is located on the northern side of the Catlins coast, trailing the Kaka point’s road. If you are at Nugget point, you have to make it a point to watch the sunrise, peeking its way through and behind the lighthouses and hills.

A more or less even terrain with occasionally bumpy sections, this place promises a drive you would not get out of your head anytime soon. Nugget Point is a place you definitely should keep in mind if your idea of a trip comprises wildlife and sea and long scenic drives. It is also strategically located near the focal attraction points within a 30-minute drive, so the point might as well be taken as a secondary trip, worthwhile either way. The panoramic view will have you peer down the coast after a short walk to the Tokata lighthouse.

History

Named by the first Englishman to set foot on this place, Captain James Cook, the term nuggets has its etymological lineage from the stout, upright masses of rocks found that bear resemblance with that of “nuggets”.

It could be visited at any time of the year since the temperature and climate are more or less moderate throughout. But to get the ideal essence it could be visited in around March or November.

Things to Do

Scenic drive- the route along the Catlin coast gives you a long, comfortable drive that is traced along with the scenic, picturesque locations, with occasional bumps and uneven terrain on the way.

Horse riding- The lush green plains of the Catlins is a great spot for horse riding. Go for it if you want the cool breeze of March or November to caress your face.

Catlin brewery- It promises you the best sip of the local Catlin beers and its variants in a super hospitable ambiance.

Tunnel Hill- A stroll through an abandoned train tunnel transports you into a completely different setting!

Picnicking- The Kaka point with its fine scenery and plains is extremely conducive for a picnic spot.

Penguin Spotting- There is a rare breed of penguin that inhabitants the Kaka point, yellow-eyed penguins. Carrying binoculars is a must to get a clear and distinct view of them.

Kayak tour- To spot the wildlife the Kayak tour is very much recommended by the experienced group of Catlins Kayak and Adventure. You will come across the fur seals, blue penguins, albatross, terns, and shags.

Owaka Museums- You may have an informational tour of the Catlins and their local history by visiting the Okawa Museum.

Dollyworld - Primarily a toy shop for family tourists. They keep items ranging from dolls, teddy bears, hand made junk jewelry, cookies, bell jars, and local souvenirs. A small part of the sale goes to the charity and philanthropy so you can rest assured knowing you're doing your part in a small way.

How To Reach Nugget Point

You can take the road along with the Kaka point to the top of Kaimataitai point.
The drive is a fairly comfortable one, replete with panoramic views of the blue-hued ocean waters.
Nugget Point is a 10-minute walk from the Kaimataitai carpark, and is along a steep footpath skirting the cliffside, making for an exciting walk.
