Meyhane

A meyhane, a traditional Turkish tavern, are establishments where people gather to enjoy a variety of mezes (appetizers), seafood, and drinks, predominantly rakı, a strong anise-flavored liquor. These are scattered throughout Istanbul, with notable concentrations in historic neighborhoods like Beyoğlu, Karaköy, and Kadıköy. The ambiance of these places is enhanced by traditional Greek and Turkish folk music.

Meyhanes hold a special place in Turkish culture. They are popular gathering spots for celebrations, heart-to-heart conversations, and even political discussions.An evening at a meyhane begins with an array of cold mezes, often presented on a large tray for diners to choose from. Common mezes include feta cheese with melon, girit ezmesi (Cretan mash), and köpoğlu (eggplant with yogurt and tomato sauce). Casual attire is generally acceptable, but some upscale meyhanes may have a slightly more formal dress code. It’s advisable to make reservations, especially on weekends.
