Ita Fort, situated in Itanagar town, is a significant historical site in Arunachal Pradesh, India, named after the Assamese word for "Fort of Bricks." Believed to have been constructed by the Sutiya kings during the 14th or 15th century, the fort's irregular shape and extensive brickwork spanning 16,200 cubic meters attest to its ancient origins. It features three entrances on the western, eastern, and southern sides, reminiscent of other fortifications in the region.
Archaeological artifacts from the site are exhibited at the Jawaharlal Nehru Museum in Itanagar. The fort's bricks suggest repairs were made during the 14th-15th century, and its builder's marks resemble those found in the ruins of the Tamreswari Temple, indicating the extension of Sutiya fortifications. While some historical accounts claim Ita Fort as the capital of Ramachandra/Mayamatta Mayapur, evidence from Assamese chronicles points to a different location for Ramachandra's capital. Ita Fort's association with the Arimatta line of kings remains uncertain.
