House of Virgin Mary, Izmir Overview

House of the Virgin Mary is a revered Catholic shrine located on Mount Koressos (also known as Bülbüldağı or "Mount Nightingale"), approximately 7 kilometers from Selçuk in İzmir Province, Turkey. This modest stone house is believed to be the final residence of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, and has become a significant pilgrimage site for both Christians and Muslims.

According to Christian tradition, after the crucifixion of Jesus, the Apostle John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus for safety, where she spent her remaining years. The existence of this house was largely unknown until the 19th century when Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German nun and visionary, described the location in her visions. Inspired by her accounts, researchers discovered the ruins of a small stone house on Mount Koressos in 1891, which matched her descriptions. This discovery led to the site's recognition as the House of the Virgin Mary.

The house exhibits typical Roman architectural characteristics, constructed entirely of stone. The original structure is believed to have been a two-story building, comprising an anteroom (now used for candle offerings), a bedroom, a prayer room, and a room with a fireplace. A front kitchen area, which had fallen into ruins, was restored in the 1940s. Today, the restored house functions as a chapel, preserving its historical and spiritual significance.
