The National Museum of Indonesia provides insight into Indonesian culture and history. It is popularly known as Gedung Gajah or Elephant building due to the large elephant statue at the entrance. The museum has a free English tour.
The 1862 building of the National Museum of Indonesia has an enormous collection of around in its open courtyard housing 61,600 prehistoric and anthropological artifacts and 5,000 archeological artifacts from all over Indonesia and Asia. The museum collections, namely ceramics, ethnography, archaeology, prehistoric, stone sculpture etc is among the richest, the most complete, and the best of its kind in Indonesia and one of the finest in Southeast Asia. With a collection that beautifully preserves nearly two hundred years of Indonesian Heritage, it is considered one of the most comprehensive museums in the Southeast Asian region.
