Mansar Food and Craft Mela is one of the major events organised in Jammu, celebrated every year in April during the harvest festival of Baisakhi. This 3-day fair, organised by the Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir, is a fantastic way of people to find local crafts created by skilled artisans, the mouth-watering delicacies of the region, and experience the age-old traditions and customs of this northern state shown in a grand and enthusiastic manner. The mela is held at the exquisite Mansar Lake, located 62 kms from Jammu.
This festive arena hosts a range of local handicrafts, made with exceptional workmanship displayed in its elegant finish. The authenticity of these products tends to give one a feeling of sophistication and class by just being in its presence. These products include paintings, pottery, beautiful artefacts, wall hangings, screens, jewellery boxes, and spectacular room dividers. Gorgeous designs of hunting, flowers, and frolicking animals are the main themes for this visual treat, as well as the famous and complex Nakarshi design and arrangement, which involves the integration of 5 layers of multicoloured lacquer. One is treated to the finesse of wonderfully crafted furniture and items from walnut, as well as the extensive collection of various creations of mimic stone works, a feature that this state is famous for. Tourists and travellers can't help but feel a part of the festivities with the vibrant and infectious energy of the celebrating locals.
If shopping isn't a key interest of yours, treat yourself to the myriad of aromas emanating from the food stalls, where you will find renowned delicacies like Shab Kashmiri Roghan Josh, Kashmiri Mutanjan, Kashmiri Gustaba, and the tasty Pasande Kabab. At the same time, visitors can explore vegetarian delights such as the famous Kashmiri Aloo Dum, Kashmiri Pulao and tasty Haak Spinach Kashmiri. All these food items are available in the mela along with several other delicious Kashmiri dishes.
