About Raja Gangadhar Rao

Jhansi was under the reign of Raghunath Rai III until 1838. Under his reign, Jhansi suffered an economic crisis and revenues kept on decreasing with an unsatisfactory population. It was under Raja Gangadhar Rao in 1843 that Jhansi’s revenue increased two-fold, and revivification of the town was at hand.

In 1842, at the age of 40, Raja Rao married Rani Manikarnika Tambe of Varanasi aged 12 who later came to be known as Rani Lakshmibai. In 1853, after the death of Anand Rao - his 4 months old son, he adopted Damodar Rao, his cousin’s son, to save Jhansi from the prying British eyes. The procession was undertaken in the presence of a British officer.

However, after his death, the British unlawfully called the Doctrine of Lapse and undertook Jhansi as their own, with Rani Lakshimibai fighting for her Swaraj.
