Cradle of Humankind, Johannesburg Overview

A paleoanthropological zone in Gauteng, about 50km northwest of Johannesburg, Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dolomitic limestone caves. These caves feature fossilised remains of the old forms of plants, rocks, animals and hominids.

There are about 13 sites here, including Sterkfontein, Drimolen, Bolt’s Farm, and Swartkrans, that are being excavated. About 850 fossilised remains of hominids have been found on the site, making it one of the world’s most affluent hominid fossil-containing areas. One can visit the Maropeng Visitors Centre here to see the fossils and stone tools that have been excavated and to learn about the site and human evolution. In addition, tours of the Sterkfontein Caves are available, and a giant movable structure called the Beetle has been placed over the Malapa site to allow visitors to observe the excavation process.
