Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens is a nature reserve in Roodepoort near Johannesburg. It is popular for a pair of Verreaux's eagles that reside in the Roodekrans Ridge and the beautiful Witpoortjie waterfall. It is also popular for birdwatching, with over 240 species of birds here. Guided tours are available.
Walter Sisulu is the ideal location for hiking, picnics, bird watching, relaxation and nature appreciation. It was first established in 1982 and has a rich and varied plant life with over 600 species. Golden Tailed Wood Pecker, Striped Kingfisher, African Hornbill, and African Black Duck, among others, are dominant here. There is an easy geological rock trail that extends up to 3.5 kilometres. Make sure to visit the waterfall and spot the nest of the Verreaux’s eagles. You can enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant on the site, and picnics are also popular here. It is also equipped with a gift shop and a bookstore.
