Salt Fields, Kampot Overview

Salt Fields are located close to Kampot in Cambodia. They are the country's only salt fields, where the farmers harvest the sea salt throughout the year. It is one of the top attractions in Kampot for the tourists who opt for various tours from the town to learn about salt manufacturing.

Salt Production in Kampot

The salt production happens throughout the year in the fields. The salt water is brought in to the fields, which are located close to the ocean. During the summer months between January and May, Salt is produced through the evaporation technique. The water collected in the fields is allowed to evaporate. The salt crystals formed is traditionally collected using hand tools and carried in wicker baskets. This process of the salt harvest is repeated several times. The salt crystals are then dried in large warehouses for further processing in the salt factory from where the finished salt is shipped.

Salt Fields Tour

You can tour the Salt Fields on your own or via private or group tours that can be booked in Kampot centre through travel agents or guesthouses. The tour lasts for about 2 hours in which you'll get to see the salt production process from the collection until processing. Guided tours are available in Khmer, English and French languages.

How To Reach Salt Fields

The Salt fields are located about 5 km from Kampot downtown and can be reached by hiring a bike for about 10 USD per day or by Tuk-Tuk that cost about 6 USD for a return trip. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the Salt Fields.
