Tiger Cave Temple, Kanchanaburi Overview
Wat Tham Suea, popularly known as the Tiger Cave Temple, enshrines the largest Buddha image in Kanchanaburi Province. It is located at Tambon Muang Chum, 4 km beyond Vachiralongkorn Dam. The sacred, gold-laced 18m-high Buddha idol can be reached by climbing three flights of 158 steps or an elevator car trip at THB 10 pax to the hilltop. Visitors can also pay respect to the holy relics at Ketkaew Prasat Chedi here.
The Buddha statue, named Chin Prathanporn, was built in 1973 in ornate Chinese-style architecture. There are statues of several other manifestations of Buddha near the foot of the massive idol. The view from the hilltop is also quite magnificent. On a clear day, you may even see the Mae Klong River and vast stretches of paddy fields on all sides of the temple. At the foothills of the lower hill is a small cave with a Buddha image guarded by two clay tigers, from where the temple gets its name.
