Ganges Barrage Kanpur, also known as Luv Kush Barrage is a bridge and a dam across the Ganges in Azad Nagar-Nawabganj in Kanpur. This 621-metred bridge is soon to serve as a four-lane highway bypass for NH 91.

Amid abundant green surroundings, this bridge cites ongoing construction. Housed in abundant greenery, this 1995-built bridge is still a part of continuous development. With constant water flowing right beneath the road, the Ganga Barrage is a must-see on the highway.

News and Facts About the Ganga Barrage

  • The bridge might be closed during monsoon due to constant water in-flow near the dam. Enquiry beforehand for monsoon travel is recommended. 
  • There are several dangerous and even deadly spots in and around the bridge. It is cautionary to be vigilant. 
  • Due to constant construction in this area, the Luv Kush barrage is said to be a great threat to the river’s pollution load. 
  • Since 1963, there have been over 4 kilometres of water that has been receded from the banks of this city. 
  • With a sum of 695 crores, a road is being constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) between Ganga barrage and the company barrage.

How To Reach Ganga Barrage Kanpur

Ganga Barrage is located on NH 91 which is connected to cities: Faridabad, Lucknow, Durgapur, Prayagraj, Agra, Asansol, Varanasi, Dhanbad, Mathura and Bardhaman. So, visitors coming from these cities can easily spot this attraction on NH 91.

As for those who come from other cities, the closest station to this attraction is Kanpur Central Station which is around 10.8 kilometres and it would take around 25 minutes via Parwati Bagla Road.

Developments of the Ganga Barrage

A number of projects have been proposed near the Ganges Barrage. The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) has approved of the Botanical Garden Project called the Lohia Botanical Garden layout plan that was put forth by a Delhi-based architect.

The Botanical Garden project aims at providing a leisurely and an educational area for kids, including cultural programmes, shopping and museum block, banquet halls, games, the entertainment zone and a food court.

Next, the KDA has planned on creating an amusement park near Ganges Barrage. Inspired by the Delhi Daat, the KDA is planning on creating a “Haat” in the amusement park that will exclusively sell handicraft items. Along with that, there would be kids play zone, drive-in cinema, an open-air amphitheatre, cafeteria and boating facilities.

Thirdly, efforts at developing the Kanpur-Lucknow expressway are ongoing. It is said that it will be an eight-lane access-controlled expressway starting from Ganga Barrage. The Kanpur Lucknow High-Speed Train will be introduced, to ease the lives of regular commuters here. 

Lastly, a project called Trans Ganga City by Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) would be introduced to create a modern clean-green city. This would involve developments such as a mega mall, multiplex, multi-storied residential complex and an exhibition centre in a housing society.
