Tethys Fossil Museum, Kasauli Overview

The Tethys Fossil Museum in Kasauli is home to a remarkable collection of approximately 500 fossils, carefully curated by geologist Dr. Ritesh Arya since 1987. Many of these specimens were integral to his Ph.D. research, adding significant scientific value to the museum's exhibits. The fossils narrate the story of the ancient Tethys Ocean, which separated India (Gondwana Land) from Tibet (Laurasia) nearly 100 million years ago, offering insights into the geological forces that led to the formation of the Himalayas.

The museum showcases a diverse array of fossils and artifacts, including 4.5-billion-year-old meteorites, 2.5-billion-year-old stromatolites, and a 70-million-year-old dinosaur egg. Other notable exhibits feature 60-million-year-old marine fossils from the Tethys Ocean, 20-million-year-old leaf fossils, and 2-million-year-old mammalian fossils. Additionally, stone tools from Pinjore highlight early human ingenuity in the Himalayan foothills.
