The Venetian Castle of Agios Georgios, also known as the Castle of Kefalonia, is the oldest mediaeval castle on Kefalonia island. It is located over the village of Peratata and is 7 km from the capital town of Argostoli. Towering walls, a few buildings, and cobblestone streets are all that remain of the once-enormous castle. The hike around the castle is steep but it is accessible via cars or scooters. Enjoy a scenic view of the island of Kefalonia from the top.
Over the years, it was destroyed by wars and earthquakes. The castle was built during the Byzantine Empire in the 12th century. During its prime years, it was the ancient capital of Kefalonia till 1757 AD, with a city within its fortifications. The capital city within the castle included prisons, residential and public buildings, tanks, reservoirs, barracks, watchtowers, and churches. The ruins of the Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas are close to the castle. There are several cafes, restaurants, and a souvenir shop on the hill as well.
