The Sacred Monastery of Agios Gerasimos is dedicated to Saint Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia. It is located on the plateau of Omalon, near Valsamata village, and is the most sacred place on the island. Worshipers visit the monastery to pray in front of the Saint’s relics, displayed in a glass chamber above his tomb. The church ceilings are adorned with biblical murals and an exquisite low-hanging chandelier.
Two caves where the Saint lived as a hermit for five years are at the back of the chapel. Tourists can climb down the ladder to visit the caves. The monastery also has an outdoor garden, which is home to a tree and a well said to be planted and dug by the Saint.
The 16th-century monastery was founded by Saint Gerasimos, who was known for his miraculous ability to cure illness. The monastery also served as a charity centre. A newly constructed church is next to the chapel. Several restaurants, vineyards, and a beekeeping facility are near the monastery.
