Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Center is a focal point in Thailand for remembering those whose lives were lost in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Ban Nam Khem was one of the country’s worst-affected areas in the disaster. The museum serves as a source of historical knowledge on the local communities and how lives changed in this quaint fishing village because of the tragic natural disaster.
The design on the front of the main building represents a huge tidal wave. The exhibition inside is divided into four major sections. The outdoor segment houses two wrecked fishing boats that the Tsunami swept ashore and they now stand as survivors of the tragedy. The indoor exhibition mostly comprises pictures, documents, news articles, and other stories of the Tsunami. There is also an information service stand, a souvenir shop, and a multimedia room. The park and garden area is ideal for a relaxed walk or picnic.
Outside, there is a warning tower inspired by traditional fishing equipment which can be climbed for a view of the surrounding area. There is a wall with a brass plate to commemorate the 1,500-something people who died in the Tsunami.
