Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city, is a place of vast snowy landscapes, frozen lakes, and Arctic wilderness. Located above the Arctic Circle, it is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, which light up the sky from autumn to early spring. The long, dark winter creates perfect conditions for the auroras, while in summer, the Midnight Sun shines for weeks, turning night into day. Kiruna is also known for its vast wilderness, deep Sámi heritage, and unique winter experiences.
One of the city’s biggest attractions is the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, the world’s first hotel made entirely of ice and snow, rebuilt every winter. Visitors can sleep in ice rooms, admire frozen sculptures, or enjoy drinks in an ice bar. Kiruna is also home to Sweden’s largest underground iron ore mine, LKAB, where guided tours take visitors deep beneath the Earth. The city has a strong Sámi cultural presence, and travelers can visit a reindeer farm, learn about Sámi traditions, and even try traditional Sámi food.
Outdoor lovers can explore Abisko National Park, one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, or hike the famous King’s Trail (Kungsleden) in summer. Dog sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing are popular winter activities, while kayaking, fishing, and hiking take over in the warmer months.
No Sun in Winter, No Night in Summer: Polar Night (December–January) means only 2-4 hours of daylight, while Midnight Sun (June–July) brings 24-hour daylight—bring a sleep mask in summer.
Phone Batteries Die Fast in the Cold: Keep devices warm in pockets and carry a power bank.
Supermarkets & Alcohol Have Limited Hours: Systembolaget (liquor store) closes early and is shut on Sundays. Buy alcohol in advance if needed.
