Officially known as the Royal Town of Klang, it is the former capital of the state Selangor, Malaysia. It may not be one of the most beautiful cities in Malaysia, but Klang has a unique old-world charm. Known for its rich heritage sites and colonial architecture, it is a city with palace, mosque, and other buildings which associate itself with the Selangor sultanate.

Located 45km from Kuala Lumpur, Klang is a popular day trip for most tourists. The colourful town is split between Klang town and port (Pelabuhan Klang) and is small enough to explore on foot. The Klang River flows through the town and divides it into South Klang and North Klang. 

Designed to be an Eco Smart City, Klang is also an education hub. Entertainment and activities in Klang take the form of sightseeing, shopping, and cinemas. There are several shopping malls here, especially South Klang. Istana Alam Shah, the royal residence of the Sultan of Selangor, Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Tugu Keris, are a few of the notable places in Klang that are worth a visit. 

The colourful royal town of Klang is popular for Malay, Indian, and Chinese Cuisine and seafood delicacies. Emporium Makan, an old spot situated in the heart of the city, is the most significant spot in Klang for Malay cuisine. Incomplete without the Indian cuisine, several Indian restaurants are located in Little India. Klang is known for its Bak Kut Teh, a non-halal herbal soup while the coastal region near Port Klang is well-known for its seafood.

How to Reach Klang

How to Reach Overview

The North Klang Valley Expressway, KESAS highway, and the South Klang Valley Expressway are major highways through which Klang is accessible, linking it to various places. 

Klang is accessible by train from Kuala Lumpur via the Pelabuhan Klang - Batu Caves track of KTM Komuter. It is also accessible using bus services like Transnasional and Cityliner buses, Rapid KL buses, Wawasan Sutera and Metrobus, and KMK Express. 

One can make use of boats that serve between Indonesia (Dumai and Tanjung Balai Asahan) and Port Klang, which is located 8km away. 

The nearest airport to Klang is Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport (SZB), followed by Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (IPH), and Kuantan Airport (KUA).

Local transport in Klang

Klang has five commuter stations that make up the 2 Port Klang Line of the KTM Komuter system. A number of highways with distinct features connect Klang to Klang valley making the travel by road easier. The Federal Highway is one of the easiest ways to get to Klang Valley and convenient but the traffic is at its peak during the peak hours.

The New Klang Valley Expressway is your second best option. The important feature of this highway is the availability of petrol stations all along the highway and the restriction of heavy vehicles, except for buses during certain hours. The North Klang Straits Bypass establishes a link to port Klang. It is better known as Federal Route 20. It is better to drive around in the city due to the limitations of public transport in Klang. The South Klang Valley Expressway is yet another alternative to travel by road.  

Klang also has the RapidKL bus route. Taxis are available outside the railway stations however finding a metered taxi is not convenient.
