Kochi Water Metro (KWM) stands as a groundbreaking venture, introducing the first-ever water metro system in India. Serving the Greater Kochi region in Kerala, this integrated ferry transport system seamlessly connects 10 island communities with the mainland, covering 76 kilometers and boasting 38 terminals. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023, the KWM is poised to become the largest electric boat metro transportation infrastructure globally, revolutionizing public transport in the region.
The KWM features a fleet of 78 battery-operated electric hybrid boats, including two variants of modernized air-conditioned catamaran passenger boats with Wi-Fi connectivity. Operating at speeds ranging from 15 to 22 kilometers per hour, these boats accommodate 50 to 100 passengers, ensuring a comfortable and efficient commute. The system incorporates an Automatic Fare Collection system, allowing seamless integration with the Kochi Metro and enhancing the overall transportation experience.
Beyond its transport function, the KWM aims to reduce annual carbon emissions by an estimated 44,000 tonnes when fully operational by 2035. The first phase, inaugurated in 2021, already serves over 34,000 passengers daily, offering a glimpse into the system's potential. With planned expansion and full operational status anticipated by 2035, the water metro is set to accommodate 1.5 lakh passengers daily, further solidifying its role in transforming urban mobility.
