Dolmen Circle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kodaikanal which promises a unique experience to all its visitors. Located around 18 km from Berijam Lake and 8 km from Kodai Lake, the Dolmen Circle boasts of pre-historic remains which can date back to 5,000 BC. It is believed that this place was the burial as well as the place where the pre-historic men belonging to the Stone Age and Iron Age dwelled known as dolmens and kistvaens. The dolmen which is made up of two large erect slabs which are further covered with a vast flat chunk is situated close to the Parvatha Vihar and the Pannikadu Village.
Though a large number of dolmens have been destroyed with time, you can still witness them at two places one of them being the Ghat road near Periyakulam and the other one at a distance of 2 km from Pannaikadu hamlet. Situated on the highest point before coming down to Pattiveerampatti, the dolmen still stands strong there without any damage as such. The remains of pre-historic inhabitants along with burial urns and models of dolmens can be found here which offer fascinating insights into the prehistoric living. However, after some research, it was found that ancient people kept their valuables here more than they stayed here themselves. Many copper and brass ornaments along with utensils have been found at the place. Kistavens however, served majorly as burial grounds. This place owing to its history and artefacts is an absolute must-visit on all the explorers out there. Also, the surrounding scenic views and the greenery is a relief to the eyes.
