Punalur Suspension Bridge, located in Punalur town of Kollam district, Kerala, was constructed in 1877 by Scottish engineer Albert Henry. Spanning the Kallada River, which flows through the heart of the city, the bridge stretches for 400 meters across its width and was the first motorable suspension bridge in South India. Built to prevent wild animals from crossing into populated areas, it remains an engineering marvel of its time.Â
Punalur, known as the "Pepper Village of Kerala," is also home to a major paper mill established in the 1850s, further highlighting the town’s historical and industrial significance. Lying along the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the district of Kollam, Punalur derives its name from two words one Tamil and one Malayalam. Tamil word 'punal' means water and Malayalam word 'ooru' means place together making Punalur the place of water.
