Krakow Barbican, Krakow Overview

The Krakow Barbican is a striking remnant of the city's medieval fortifications and one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in Europe. Located at the northern edge of Krakow’s Old Town, near St. Florian’s Gate and Planty Park it features seven turrets, a moat, and thick walls up to 3 meters wide.

Built in the late 15th century, this defensive bastion once served as a key point of protection for the northern entrance to Krakow’s Old Town. It was part of Krakow’s extensive fortification system, designed to defend against Ottoman and Tatar invasions and was strategically connected to St. Florian’s Gate via a fortified bridge. Over the centuries, the Barbican has evolved from a military stronghold to a symbol of Krakow’s rich heritage.
