Kuala Terengganu, also abbreviated as K.T., is the capital of Terengganu state of Malaysia. It is a full package of all in one attractions ranging from beaches to waterfalls to mosques. If you have time, you must visit Pulau Perehtian which can be reached from Kuala Besut Jetty and is approximately a 4 hour journey and Pantai Batu Buruk Beach famed for watersports and jungle treks is just a 5km drive. You can drive to Seberang Takir by Asia’s Biggest Draw Bridge that of Kuala Terengganu Draw Bridge which connects the Mura Selatan from South Bank to Muara Utara in North Bank.

Chinatown of Kuala Terengganu is renowned for its wall arts and gorgeous Murals. When walking through Chinatown, pay a visit to Ho An Buddist Temple and Teck Soon Heritage House bright with hues of blue. Architecture and history lovers would love to see the famous and historical Istana Maziah popularly known as Maziah Palace. The Crystal Mosque in KT is a grand structure made of steel, glass and crystal and offers a magnificent view. The people of Kuala Terengganu are known to be religious and socially conservative. Public display of affection is against the social norms.
KT has very few alcohol shops and bars as the locals usually don't indulge in drinking. However, you can find about a few bars offering alcohol around the city. It is suggested that you don't drink in public places.
There is not much to shop from Kuala Terengganu and no shopping mall in the vicinity. However, you can check out Pasar Payang and Pantai Batuk Buruk Nightlife Market to buy handicrafts and Batik prints.

Local Culture in Kuala Terengganu

The people of Kuala Terengganu are closely tied to family and strict about their morals. The city is very rich in culture, heritage and art. They have dances ranging from Little Baniong Birds, Ulek Mayang Dance, Balai Dance, Cobra Dance and Gamelan. There are several places in KT to witness the Gamelan dance without any fee. Weaving has been an art passed on among the community since centuries. Songket weaving is also another prime highlight of the place. There are several places that offer a workshop in weaving for the tourists. The most famous handicraft is that of “lekar” a handwoven fruit basket. It is also famous for its brasswork, wooden carving, keirs and kite making.

Keropok Lekor, fish sausage cracker snack is the most famed delicacy of Kuala Terengganu. Kuih made up of taro, dried prawns and rice flour is a Malay traditionally made cake very well-known among tourists and locals. Nasi Dagang is a scrumptious meal consisting of coconut milk steamed rice along with fish curry and pickled cucumber and carrot. The savour is sweet and spicy sauce. Madam Bee’s Kitchen is one of the famous heritage restaurants well known for ethnic Malay Cuisine.
