Mount Santubong, Kuching Overview

With a height of 810 metres, the mammoth Mount Santubong stands erected on Damai Peninsular near Kuching. Regarded as one of the highest peaks in Kuching, it boasts several hiking trails that allure trekkers and adventure seekers across the nation.

The majestic Mount Santbong rises out from the sea which is formed after a collision between the oceanic and the continental crusts. However, legends believe that this mountain has a mythological origin dating back to the centuries. A princess was punished by the king for fighting with her sister and she was cursed into Mount Santubong.

This mountain lies within the national park of the same name and offers spectacular views of the Santubong Village and the South China Sea.

Hiking to Mount Santubong

Mount Santubong is a prominent attraction in the entire Damai Peninsula and trekking to the summit is a much-loved activity by the tourists and the locals alike. However, this trek is often considered challenging. It takes around 4 hours to reach the top and more or less the same time to descend. There are several entry points from where one can start the trek.

Starting Point
The Bukit Puteri Entrance trail is the fastest way to reach the summit. Through Green Paradise Cafe the route takes one through a small waterfall and a suspension bridge. Both of these are considered good starting points for the trek. The trail from Bukit Puteri, Green Paradise Cafe, SCV and Permai Rainforest Resort will meet at Viewpoint No. 1 from where the path is common for all.

The Route
There are several vantage points along the trek route to soak up the jaw-dropping views of the surrounding. This trek will take one through the thick tropical rainforest that is enriched with abundant flora and fauna. One might also spot many small animals that live here. Small huts are strategically built at various points where trekkers can take shelter during thunderstorms and downpours. As you climb higher, the gradient gets steeper and one has to climb a rope ladder to get to the top.

The Top
After reaching the Mount Santubong summit, one is rewarded with sweeping views of the South China Sea and the village. There are also a number of tourist spots at the foot of the mountain and they look mesmerizing from the top. While descending, spend some time at the tranquil waterfall and enjoy the serenity.

How to Reach the Starting Point of the Trek

Frequent buses and taxis that run from Kuching city centre and take passengers to the entry point located at the foot of Mount Santubong. The estimated travel time is around 45 minutes by road.
