Martvili Canyon is located 2 kilometers from the village of Gachedili and is also called Gachedili Canyon. It is formed by the Abasha River. You can take a 300-meter boat ride that leads to the large 12-meter waterfall in the middle of the canyon, and enjoy the beautiful views of the moss-covered mountains. There are 2 bridges, historical 30-step stairs made of large limestone boulders, and 3 observation platforms that give a panoramic view of the area. Although the canyon is open throughout the year, the active season lasts from April to October.
It takes a one-hour drive from Kutaisi to reach Martvili Canyon. You can follow a short walking path that leads up to the observation platforms. This walking trail is 700-metre long and can be covered in under 30 minutes. The Canyon also holds historical significance as it was the bath place for The Dadiani family, which ruled Georgia until 1867. The 30-step limestone stair trail used by them is still preserved. A nearby major attraction is a Megrelian two-storey mill which was operational in the 18th and 19th centuries. The canyon’s visitor center is located in the village of Inchkhuri.
