"Santa's Snowy Home Where the Northern Lights Dance"

Lapland Tourism

Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, is a place straight out of a fairy tale. Covered in snowy forests, frozen lakes, and wide-open Arctic landscapes, it is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, which dance across the sky from autumn to spring. In summer, the Midnight Sun keeps the sky bright for weeks, making it a land of endless daylight. Lapland is also home to Santa Claus, and visitors can meet him any time of the year in Rovaniemi, his official hometown.

Winter in Lapland is full of magical experiences. Ride a husky sled through snowy trails, zoom across frozen lakes on a snowmobile, or take a reindeer sleigh ride under the stars. Staying in glass-roofed cabins, the Northern Lights can be seen from bed, is one the most popular experiences. Warming up in a traditional Finnish sauna and taking an ice plunge into a frozen lake are some beautiful and true Arctic experiences. Ski resorts like Levi and Ylläs offer slopes for every skill level, while families can enjoy snow parks, tobogganing, and fun activities for kids.

Lapland’s beauty changes with the seasons. In autumn, golden forests and colorful tundras make it perfect for hiking and canoeing. Wildlife lovers can spot reindeer, Arctic foxes, and even wild bears. A famous cultural activity, here, is spending time with Sámi people, the only indigenous group in the European Union, who lived in Lapland in harmony with nature for thousands of years.

Must Know Before You Travel to Lapland

No Sun in Polar Night, No Darkness in Summer: In winter, it’s dark almost all day, while in summer, the Midnight Sun means no night at all. In December and January, some areas get only 1-3 hours of daylight.
Northern Lights Are Not Guaranteed: Aurora visibility depends on weather and solar activity—plan for multiple nights and check forecasts.
Extreme Cold in Winter: Temperatures can drop to -30°C or lower, so thermal layers, insulated boots, gloves, and face coverings are essential.
