Ivalo is a charming village located along the Ivalo River, approximately 20 kilometers south of Lake Inari. It is renowned for its winter sports, including snowmobiling, husky sledding, and ice fishing along with Northern Lights viewing. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy hiking, canoeing, and mountain biking amidst the midnight sun.
Ivalo experiences the midnight sun from late May to late July, where the sun remains above the horizon. Conversely, the polar night occurs from late November to mid-January, during which the sun does not rise above the horizon. The nearby Ivalo River, often called the "River of Gold," was central to Finland's gold rush in the 19th century. Today, visitors can explore historical sites related to gold prospecting.
Despite the challenges posed by the harsh Arctic environment, Ivalo has maintained its cultural heritage while adapting to modern influences, making it a unique blend of old and new. Ivalo is accessible via the Ivalo Airport (IVL), the northernmost airport in Finland, with regular flights connecting to Helsinki. From the airport, travelers can reach the village center by bus or taxi. Accommodation options range from cozy guesthouses to unique glass-roofed cabins designed for optimal Northern Lights viewing.
