Urho Kekkonen National Park is one of Finland’s largest and most stunning national parks, covering over 2,550 square kilometers (985 square miles) in Lapland. Located near Saariselkä and Ivalo, this vast wilderness is known for its untouched Arctic landscapes, rolling fells, deep forests, abundant wildlife, and outdoor adventures, including hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and Northern Lights viewing.
Urho Kekkonen National Park is one of the best places in Finland to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). From September to March, the dark Arctic skies provide perfect conditions for aurora viewing, with minimal light pollution. Popular spots for seeing the Northern Lights include Kiilopää Fell and Suomujoki River, both offering unobstructed views of the night sky. Urho Kekkonen National Park features a vast network of trails, ranging from short scenic walks to multi-day treks through deep wilderness. One of the most popular day hikes is the Kiilopää Fell Trail (6 km round-trip), which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Arctic landscape. For a more immersive experience, the Luulampi Trail (18 km round-trip) takes hikers through ancient Sámi reindeer herding grounds and peaceful forest landscapes.
