Williamson Tunnels are a series of subterranean excavations and underground caverns located in the Edge Hill district of Liverpool. The tunnels are known to be established in the early 1800s by eccentric philanthropist and tobacco Merchant and landowner Joseph Williamson.
Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre gives a 45 minutes guided tour through the open section of the tunnel. At present, it has turned into a famous tourist spot that attracts visitors and historians who are trying to dig out some facts regarding the tunnel's curious existence. The purpose of constructing these tunnels is still vague and unknown according to the 'Friends of the Williamson Tunnel' which has eluded historians. Williamson himself never revealed his intention. Although there are various speculations regarding the establishment. There also exists a small gallery where you can get a glimpse of historical items and artefacts. Most of the tunnels still exist but only a small section is renovated and opened for public visit.
