Dragon Bridge is a renowned road bridge on Ljubljanica River between Kopitar Street and Ressel Street, just north of the Ljubljana Central Market at Vodnik Square. It is famous for its four imposing dragon statues, along with sixteen smaller dragon motifs along the balustrades. These dragons have become emblematic of Ljubljana, earning it the nickname "City of Dragons.". The bridge is mostly visited for its admirable Art Nouveau architecture and to be photographed with the iconic dragons.
Constructed during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Dragon Bridge replaced an old wooden bridge damaged by the 1895 earthquake. Designed by architect Jurij Zaninović, it was one of Europe's earliest reinforced concrete bridges and is considered a masterpiece of the Vienna Secession (Art Nouveau) style. The bridge features a 33.34-meter arch and is adorned with four large dragon statues at its corners. The Dragon Bridge was originally named the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I but was renamed in 1919 due to the prominence of its dragon statues.
