Ljubljana Botanical Garden, Ljubljana Overview

The Ljubljana Botanical Garden, officially known as the University of Ljubljana Botanical Garden, is Slovenia's oldest cultural, scientific, and educational institution, established in 1810. Located approximately a 15-minute walk from Ljubljana's historical city center, near the junction of the Gruber Canal and the Ljubljanica River, it houses over 4,500 plant species and subspecies.

About one-third of these are native to Slovenia, while the remainder originate from various parts of Europe and other continents. Visitors are drawn to its diverse plant collections, serene environment, and the opportunity to explore different sections, including an arboretum, plant system area, ecological groups, and a tropical glasshouse.

Since its inception under the leadership of Franc Hladnik during the Napoleonic Illyrian Provinces era, the garden has been a center for botanical research and education. It collaborates with over 270 botanical gardens worldwide and plays a crucial role in the cultivation and protection of Slovenia's endemic, endangered, vulnerable, and rare plant species.
