Metelkova Mesto is an autonomous cultural center in Ljubljana, renowned for its vibrant street art, alternative music scene, and dynamic nightlife. The area spans approximately 12,500 square meters and houses a variety of clubs, art galleries, performance spaces, and communal areas. Established in 1993, this area transformed from former military barracks into a hub for artists, musicians, and various subcultures.
Originally constructed in 1882 by the Austro-Hungarian Army, the barracks were vacated in 1991 following Slovenia's independence. In 1993, a group of activists and artists occupied the abandoned buildings, leading to the creation of Metelkova Mesto. Over the years, it has become a symbol of urban culture and a testament to grassroots creativity and resilience.
