The National Museum of Slovenia (Narodni muzej Slovenije) is the country's oldest museum, established in 1821. Located at two location,in Muzejska and Metelkova, the museum showcases Slovenia's rich cultural heritage through extensive archaeological, numismatic, and historical collections. Visitors can explore artifacts ranging from the Stone Age to the 20th century, including the world's oldest musical instrument—the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute from the Divje babe cave—and the renowned Vače situla, a 6th-century BC Celtic pail.
The museum is housed in a Neo-Renaissance building constructed in 1888, which it shares with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. Its collections encompass archaeological artifacts, old coins and banknotes, and items related to the applied arts. Notable exhibits include the Egyptian Collection, featuring the only ancient Egyptian mummy in Slovenia, and a vast array of Roman-era artifacts.
