Postojna Cave, Ljubljana Overview

Visiting Postojna Cave from Ljubljana is a popular day trip, located approximately 45 minutes away from Ljubljana. It is easily accessible by car, bus, or organized tour. Spanning over 24 kilometers, it is celebrated for its extensive network of tunnels, passages, and magnificent chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Tourists are drawn to its unique underground landscapes, the thrilling electric train ride that delves deep into the cave, and the opportunity to witness the endemic olm, often referred to as the "human fish." It can be combined with a trip to Predjama Castle.

Formed by the Pivka River over millions of years, Postojna Cave has been a significant attraction since the early 19th century. In 1872, it became the first cave globally to introduce a cave railway, enhancing the visitor experience. The guided tour includes a 3.7-kilometer train journey, followed by a 1.5-kilometer walk through illuminated sections showcasing formations like the 16-meter-high stalagmite known as the "Skyscraper" and the brilliant white stalagmite called the "Brilliant." The cave also houses the world's oldest underground post office.
