Preseren Square, Ljubljana Overview

Preseren Square (Presernov trg) is the main square in Ljubljana, located right next to the famous Triple Bridge. It is one of the city’s most lively spots, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, cafés, and the pink-colored Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. It is a popular meeting place for locals and is famous for its lively atmosphere, especially during festivals and events.

Named after the esteemed national poet France Prešeren, the square is a vibrant hub renowned for its historical significance, architectural beauty, and cultural events. Tourists frequent Prešeren Square to admire its stunning Art Nouveau buildings, visit the prominent Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, and experience the lively atmosphere that epitomizes Ljubljana's charm.

Originally a medieval road junction leading to one of the city's gates, Prešeren Square evolved significantly over the centuries. Following the demolition of Ljubljana's city walls in the mid-19th century, the area was transformed into a square and paved. The devastating earthquake of 1895 prompted the construction of several notable bourgeois palaces around the square, including the Frisch House, Seunig House, Urbanc House (which housed the city's first department store), Hauptman House, and Mayer Palace. These structures showcase a blend of architectural styles, with a notable presence of Art Nouveau elements. The square's current circular design was implemented in 1987–88, based on plans by architect Edvard Ravnikar, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and functionality.
