Loved among hikers and nature lovers for its seclusion and verdant forest, Lewis Falls is nestled amidst sylvan canyons in the tropics of San Gabriel Mountains. The trail to the waterfall is graced by a pristine creek bed with rugged boulders to accentuate the ivy-strewn terrain. Lush grass and Californian wildflowers encircle the falls, creating an ambient spot to sit and admire the Azusa valley views afront.
Hiding several tiers above the main one within lush foliage, Lewis Falls is fed by Soldier Creek and flows robustly all year. The falls is enclosed on three sides and plunges onto the head of the canyon to create a sparkling splash pool in front, a playground for colorful koi fish. The pool may have some icy layers in winter and the weather turns chilly. Housing few of America’s rarest groves, the hike up to Lewis Falls is covered with white alders, oaks, cedars and maple trees while pines, firs and misty air dominate the deeper forests. Their fallen logs and green branches also offer challenging yet picture-perfect obstacles for hikers and bringing wet gears is recommended. Following the creek, the trail dips down west and after ducking under a few bushes on your way, the babbling cascade of Lewis Falls gets closer.
