Sturtevant Falls is known to be one of San Gabriel Mountains' finest waterfall hikes, strewn with moss, algae and fed by babbling creeks within Big Santa Anita Canyon. The falls cascades onto a pristine pool, ideal for swimming and rock climbing. A canopy of ivy-covered alders, sycamores and live oaks grace the trail which is easy to hike with your family.
There are abundant seating spaces around Sturtevant Falls, so remember to pack a picnic and enjoy relaxing against the quaint cabins, most of which are in stunning ruins. Beginning at Chantry Flat, the paved hiking trail winds along mountains and leads to a creek in the depths of the canyon. There are plenty of man-made dams to enjoy cliff jumping on your way to Sturtevant Falls. You will have to cross a picturesque bridge where many photographers stop by to frame the glassy water. Crossing the Sturtevant Creek a few more times brings you directly to the awe-inspiring falls. Should you choose to stay and enjoy wildlife watching or horseback riding in the area, there are cozy tents, picnic tables and bonfires to enjoy at the historic Sturtevant Camp which is accessible if you hike a mile across the upper tier of the waterfall.
