Wat Pa Phon Phao History & Significance

Wat Pa Phon Phao also called as Wat Phon Phao translates to Peacefulness Temple in the local language. It was built in the 1950s and is known for the characteristic golden stupa and colourful wall paintings in the interior of the temple, which depicts various teachings and life of Buddha. It was used for meditation and retreat, and even today monks reside in the monastery here.

Women monks manage the working of this temple. It is well known for the teachings of the famous monk Ajahn Saisamut, whose funeral in 1992 was the largest in Laos.

Tips

It is expected that tourists dress appropriately while visiting a Buddhist temple. Women need to cover their shoulder at all times and wear knee-length attire. Sleeveless shirts and shorts are not also allowed for both men and women. The rules are strictly followed, and you might be denied entry by the guards if you fail to obey them. You also need to take off your shoes, hat and sunglasses before entering the temple premises.
