Valley of Workers

The Valley of the Workers is a historic village located near Valley of Queens in Luxor. It served as the home for skilled artisans and craftsmen who played a crucial role in constructing and adorning the royal tombs found in the nearby Valleys of the Kings and Queens. There were about 70 houses excavated here, that are now open for viewing.

Unlike typical villages of ancient Egypt, Deir el-Medina was meticulously planned. It was established by Amenhotep I around 1541-1520 BCE to provide housing for workers tasked with the delicate and secretive work on the royal tombs. This strategic move aimed to safeguard the final resting places of pharaohs from tomb robbers, as the tombs were carved into the cliffs of less accessible areas known as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens.

Today, the Valley of the Workers attracts visitors from around the world due to its rich historical significance and well-preserved ruins. Tourists are drawn to explore the remnants of this ancient village, which offer insights into the daily lives and remarkable craftsmanship of its inhabitants. The site provides a glimpse into the meticulous planning and organization of ancient Egyptian society, showcasing the living quarters, workshops, and communal areas of the artisans.
