Pratapgad fort Trek, Mahabaleshwar Overview

Pratapgad is a hill fort in Maharashtra. Situated close to the famous hill station of Mahabaleshwar in the district of Satara, the citadel rises to an elevation of about 3500 feet from the ground.

Much of the fortifications are still intact, and the fort is a popular tourist destination. There are four lakes within the fort, many of which overflow during the monsoons. There is a watchtower just beside the Mahadarwaza, or the main entrance, at the end of the motorable road. There is a statue of Shivaji Maharaj in his full glory, which was installed about 60 years ago. There is a Bhawani temple at the top of the fort, and a cultural library showcasing the heritage of the fort. There is a handicrafts centre en route to Pratapgad from the base village, which draws a lot of tourists.

Water Availability

There are as many as four lakes within the fort. The trekkers may choose to carry their own water supply with them.

Food availability

There are several restaurants in and around the fort which serve good quality food. In addition, homemade food is available in the village of wada from where the motorable road to the base of the fort starts.

Trek Routes

There are no clearly defined trails which can be followed in order to reach the top of the fort. There is a motorable road however from the village of Wada which takes us right up to the fort.

How to reach Pratapgad Fort

Rail: The nearest railhead is the Pune railway station. Local trains are available from Mumbai and Kalyan railway stations to this place. Besides, Pune is well connected with the major cities of India through a robust rail network.
Road: State transport buses are available from Mumbai to the base of the fort via Poladpur. There is a village near Poladpur by the name of Wada Kumbroshi. A tarmac road originates from the village which terminates just before the famous watchtower at the fort. Besides, Pratapgad Darshan buses are available from Mahabaleshwar.
