Located in an old market at Soho de Málaga, the City Council of Malaga, or CAC is best known for its temporary exhibitions, shown in four dedicated areas, one of them being the largest that exhibits visiting artists. The permanent collection at CAC offers an exciting mix of pieces.
The CAC has hosted the biggest names on the contemporary art scene since it opened in 2003. Damien Hirst, Miquel Barceló, Anish Kapoor, Mark Ryden, Gilbert & George, Ai Weiwei, Tracy Emin, Peter Doig, Cristina Iglesias, and Marina Abramovic are among those who have exhibited here. With a permanent collection of 400 pieces, the museum is home to some of the best artworks of the 1960s, especially those of Lichtenstein and Stella. This fascinating modern art museum occupies the former warehouse of a wholesale market with a vast space of about 2,400 square metres. A riverside cafe is at the museum's disposal. The City Council of Malaga culturally initiated the Contemporary Art Centre or CAC. The CAC was inaugurated on February 17th, 2003, by her Royal Highness Infanta Cristina and has rapidly established itself as one of the most important contemporary art museums in Europe.
