Islamic Centre, Maldives Overview

Being the state religion of the Maldives, the Islamic Center in Male is one of the country's most famous and beautiful marvels of architecture. Situated in the northern fringes of the capital city, close to the Hulhule ferry point and neighbouring the Republic Square (Jumhooree Maidan), the grand building is the perfect example of Islamic architecture.

The colossal structure is one of the most visited landmarks in the country, and its remarkable presence dominates the city's skyline, thanks to its massive golden dome and a graceful minaret as its companion. It is the spot of several conference halls and an Islamic library. The centre also houses numerous offices, most importantly the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. It is believed that up to 5,000 people can be welcomed in the premises at once. The building lights up during Friday prayer sessions as thousands of worshippers gather to offer their devotion.

History

Officially known as the Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, the site is named after one of the most revered Maldivian heroes, Sultan Muhammed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, who played a significant role in the uprising against the Portuguese who ruled the nation for 15 years. The landmark was inaugurated on 11th November 1984 by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and now stands strong as the largest mosque in the Maldives and one of the largest in Asia.

The architecture of Islamic Centre - Symbol of the State

Islamic Center has turned into a symbol for the island city and also the country itself. Constructed purely of white marble, the building stands out distinctively from its counterparts because of its sheer size and modest outlook. The interior of the building is immaculate, to say the least, with splendid chandeliers, intricate woodcarvings, and impressive Arabic calligraphy. The centre is a fine example of Maldivian art and craftsmanship, exemplifying the importance of Islam and its teachings in the country. All in all, the Islamic Center is a must-visit site on your visit to Male.
