Malia Old Town

Old Town, Malia Overview

Away from the bustle, busy bars, and white-washed buildings, Malia Old Town is a quaint adventure best discovered while walking through its cobbled streets. Explore traditional architecture, tranquil taverns and Medieval churches along with interacting and observing local cultural nuances.

Located to the southwest of the main town, one can reach the Old Town on foot from the city center. Similarly, it takes a 15-minute walk from Malia Beach, though buses are also available within the city that can help reach the Old Town. Old houses with courtyards blossoming with flowers, children playing, and adults seated on their chairs outdoors enjoying conversations and games are sights that are common in the Old Town. However, through the maze of streets, there are a few landmark attractions that are worth a visit.
The Church of Agios Nektarios is the largest church in Old Town and looks beautiful with its arches, towers and white walls embellished in gold. The insides of the church are even better, as the walls are vividly decorated with paintings created by Greek painter Michael Vassilakis. The Agios Dimitrios Church is another authentic architectural delight and is located in one of the best squares in Old Town. Lined with taverns and cafes, the large courtyard is the perfect spot to sip traditional Greek coffee or enjoy other delicious dishes. Also, an old kiosk built during the second world war is found here that is like a minimarket to shop for souvenirs and other essentials. The Agios Ioannis Church is another church situated in a lovely alley that is decorated with flowers and has a quite homely tavern. The Parthenagogeion or Girls’ School has a tree-shaded outdoor area where people sit and read the newspaper while enjoying their coffee. The Agios Georgios Church is next to the San Georgio Tavern which is also often considered the best tavern in Malia Old Town. The food is delicious and the ambiance is friendly and comfortable. Besides, there is music in the evening too.
