Lower Barrakka Gardens, Malta Overview

The Lower Barrakka Gardens are a peaceful public garden in Valletta, located on the southeastern edge of the city overlooking the Grand Harbour. The gardens feature a Neoclassical monument dedicated to Sir Alexander Ball, lush greenery, and excellent views of the Siege Bell Memorial and the surrounding waterfront.

Established in the 19th century, the gardens complement the Upper Barrakka Gardens, both providing striking views over the Grand Harbour. A prominent feature of the gardens is the Temple of Proserpina, a Neoclassical monument dedicated to Sir Alexander Ball, a key figure in Malta's history during British rule.

Visitors can explore shaded pathways lined with Mediterranean flora, stone benches, and commemorative plaques. The gardens provide excellent photo opportunities, including clear views of the Siege Bell Memorial, the harbor, and the Three Cities across the water. Public seating and a calm atmosphere make it an ideal spot for relaxing, reading, or enjoying the views. Accessible by a short walk from Valletta's center, the gardens are free to enter and open daily.
