Gauri Shankar Temple, Manali Overview

Gauri Shankar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in the village of Naggar in Manali. It is a small structure carved out of stones but has immense historical importance in the region. Built in the Shikhara style of architecture, the ancient temple is preserved as a heritage site in Manali. Architecture of Gauri Shankar Temple

Gauri Shankar Temple is a perfect illustration of the shikhara style of architecture. The most salient feature is the dome shape that forms the Shikhara having nine levels of intricate carvings. These are ornamentations and ardharatne motifs that add to the beauty of the rest of the structure. The monumental edifice is completely made of black stone and has a solid square shaped base. </br? Inside the opulent Gauri Shankar temple are idols of Goddess Gauri and Lord Shiva on a pedestal. A statue of Nandi can also be seen similar to every Shiva Temple in India. The insides of the shrine is decorated with intricate and beautiful carvings of Lord Ganesh, musicians playing instruments, and dancers performing.

Trek to Gauri Shankar Temple

Adventure seekers can trek to Gauri Shankar Temple from Manali. A part of the trek is down the valley and then up a hill on which Naggar Village is located. Some also raise the adventure level from cycling down from Manali. The route goes via the bank on the right side of River Beas through smaller villages, apple orchards and rice paddy fields. The trek downhill is about 22 kilometres distance which can be descended easily. However, the same portion is a difficult climb while returning back to Manali. Many choose to rent a vehicle to return to Manali.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Gauri Shankar Temple is in the mornings and the evenings. Manali is best explored between October and February (winter season) and March and June (summers). The region receives snowfall during the winters, and some of the routes may be blocked due to heavy snow. However, the weather is clear and pleasant during summers and making the commute to the temple a pleasurable activity.

How To Reach Gauri Shankar Temple

Gauri Shankar Temple is easily accessible by road from Manali. It is located near the Naggar Bus Stop. Buses frequently ply from Manali to Naggar and taking a local bus ride is one of the most affordable modes of public transport here. However, one can choose to rent cabs, taxis or motorbikes on an hourly basis or drive private vehicles to travel to the temple and return via Kullu-Naggar-Manali road.
