Kaunos Ancient City, Marmaris Overview
Kaunos is an archaeological site and ancient city in Turkey. There are many attractions to discover in this old city. The temple tombs here have incredible architecture with their rock-cut style. Together, these 170 structures form the Kaunian necropolis. Every structure is marked with information boards for better understanding. Although the site is near Dalyan, it is a difficult to explore because of uneven terrain. It requires about 2-3 hours for exploration and is included in museum card.
The Dalyan river wetlands are a beauty and were once the open bay of the city. There are churches, monuments, baths, and a Greek theatre that still remains and displays Roman, Hellenistic, and Byzantine styles. The city has borne many civilisations and empires through the past 3000 years. It was once a port town with harbours and a huge bay.
