GUM, Moscow Overview

GUM is a historic shopping center located along the eastern side of Red Square in Moscow. Originally constructed between 1890 and 1893, the building showcases a blend of Russian medieval architecture and innovative engineering, featuring a steel framework and a glass roof designed by Vladimir Shukhov. It is known for its architectural beauty and the variety of high-end boutiques it houses. Even if shopping isn't the primary goal, strolling through its elegant arcades offers a unique experience.

Throughout its history, GUM has served various roles, from housing over 1,000 shops in the early 20th century to being repurposed as office space during the Soviet era. After reopening as a department store in 1953, it became one of the few Soviet stores consistently stocked with consumer goods, often attracting long queues of shoppers. Today, GUM operates as a shopping mall, hosting over 100 different brands, along with cafes and restaurants, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
