The Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique Overview

The Quirimbas Archipelago lies in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of North Eastern Mozambique. It consists of 32 islands from Cape Delgado to the Tanzanian border. The Archipelago is popular for the bone white beaches, fresh seafood, watersports and rich wildlife.

The islands of Ibo, Quisiva and Matemo are particularly popular as they contain old Portuguese and pre-colonial Swahili settlements. The Quirimbas National Park is a haven for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Over 350 species of marine life can be seen, including ribbon eels, spotted sweetlips and yellow-banded snappers. Other wildlife includes butterflies, tropical flowers, monkeys and birds. Diving is a very popular activity here due to the thriving marine life, which includes turtles, dugongs, whales, dolphins and vibrant coral reefs.

The Islands are also a cultural gold mine with historical significance for the Arabians, the Africans and the Portuguese. The fort on Ibo island is a popularly visited location. The Islands also offer stunning views of the Indian Ocean and watching the sun rise or set a must-have experience. It is best to visit between September and November during the whale migration season when the water is clear, and the weather is warm. It is best to stay on Ibo island and travel to the other islands by boat.
