Mundgod

Mundgod is a town in Karnataka that lies between Hubli and Sirsa. 4000 acres of land in Mundgod was gifted by the Government of Karnataka to refugees from Tibet and this settlement commemorates old Buddhist-Tibetan culture through handicrafts, restaurants and teachings. Buddhism, as recognised and preached in ancient Nalanda, is taught at the Drepung Loseling Monastery and the Gaden Jangtse Monastic College in Mundgod. Try booking accommodation in Hubli as the options in Mundhod are limited. 

It is also known for the Attiveri Bird Sanctuary which is home to about 79 species of birds. The town was made to preserve the Nalanda Buddhist traditions. Mundgod has a total of eleven villages. The villages of Drepung and Gandm are only for monasteries. Walk along the streets to the small shops that sell little Tibetan and Chinese souvenirs, and eating at one of the many local Tibetan restaurants is a must. 

The Gaden Jangtse Monastic College is a replica of the 500-year-old Doeguling Monastic University in Tibet. The university in Tibet was destroyed in 1959 by the Chinese during the invasion.
