The pelican called Petros is not only another tourist attraction of Mykonos, he is a legacy that lives in the hearts of the people. The pelican has been officially declared the mascot of Mykonos. Among the harbour area along with the Alefkandra area and town, this cute creature is found wandering the streets. They are also spotted at the local taverns and Chora street.
In 1958, an injured pelican was rescued by a fisherman who brought him home and aided him. The pelican got used to humans and never left town and soon enough the locals named him “Petros”. Petros became famous among locals and tourists and there was even a lawsuit between Tinos (neighbouring island) and Mykonos after the pelican suddenly disappeared and was seen in Tinos. The pelican did come back to his home safely after many campaigns by the locals of Mykonos. The original Pelican died in 1985.
The legacy still lives with three new pelicans namely Petros, Nikolas and Irini that live on the island and roam freely around the island. The locals and tourists can’t get enough of these amazing creatures. The Pelicans are friendly and would love to be petted, given a treat and photographed. Mykonos trip is not complete without a picture with these beautiful creatures. Their favourite hangout spots include - Nikos Taverna, Little Venice, Mykonos Town Waterfront, and Paraportiani Square.
